Directions are 50% useless and throw the shelf away... April 14, 2010

The desk arrived disassembled in a large square box. The desk pieces were packed with care - wrapped in the plastic dolphin-type skin and lots of styrofoam pieces. Only a few nicks in the wood=stain, but easily repairable with one of my kids' magic markers. After taking all the pieces out and accounting for them (marked with stickers with numbers) I started to assemble the desk. Don't get too comfortable with the pictures in the directions. They are backwards. If you're a person who doesn't read and just tackles the project you'll be fine. You'll also be fine if you read. But if you look at the pictures - good luck to you. I'm a reader but thought the backward pictures were funny. I decided not to install the lower shelf. The "widget" that connects the two pieces of wood-shelf is held together by "screw-top" widgets. The CHINESE metal does not hold up to a screw driver. The screw top destroyed itself (as the directions said - if its tightened too tight - It wasn't tight. It's CHINESE METAL. If my wife really wants the shelf, I'll probably glue it and reenforce it with a hidden piece of wood underneath. The desk is sturdy without the shelf. Personally, I think there is more leg room without the shelf. The drawer goes together well, is sturdy and slides in when assembled. The review is given 4 stars because its a solid piece of "assembly required" furniture. It's not Stickley, but it's not supposed to be. It's ok to buy this desk with confidence.

decent price and looks great - even though instructions state that 'two' people are needed to assemble, I did just fine by myself. looks great in the corner but it IS a wee bit smaller than I had imagined - more my fault than theirs. oh yeah....give yourself a GOOD 2 hours to put this together!
